Summer Boost Program Choices

For:  Current 6-8 Grade Students 

Dates: June 14-June 25, 2021

Times: 9:00AM-12:00PM (**unless otherwise notated)

Location:  SEMS 

 

Science Foundations

Current 7th grade students will experience live demonstrations and hands-on experiments. Lessons will include describing what an atom or molecule is by making a model, learning about states of matter, using basic physics equations to make an object move, identifying DNA, and application to some real-life examples through current events and learning about science careers choices.

SEMS Run Club

Current 6-8th grade students can join a run club that includes students of all abilities which will provide an opportunity to improve their overall health, expand social relationships, understand goal setting, relieve stress, establish grit and motivation with setting personal goals.

Learning is Fun

Current 6-8 grade students will be provided an opportunity to practice skills using IXL in math and science. Students will be able to use materials to support scientific experiments using the NGSS standards.

Feel Empowered Everyday

Current 6-8 grade students will be able to understand and embrace who they are individually through focusing on their strengths to help reduce anxiety, depression, stress and teach students how they do things best. Opportunities will be given for students to build self-awareness, self-acceptance and self-management and direction for handling social emotional issues that often distract teens from being able to focus on academics. They will learn tools that pertain to their particular strengths, and discussions on the importance of self-talk, mindset, perspective and choices which all lead to empowerment.

Rock Guitar

Current 6-8 grade students will work on basic guitar skills from beginning to advanced while improving fine motor skills, self-esteem and social skills.

Reading Recovery

Current 6-8 grade students will have the opportunity for reading recovery. Students will increase their knowledge on building skills, developing robust vocabulary, stamina and discussion abilities using core novels.

Youth Leadership Program 

Current 6-8 grade students will experience an enrichment program promoting strength, leadership, and positive self image amongst the young students of SEMS. Activities include: yoga, hiking, trips to the grocery store- for making healthy snacks, critical thinking social media lessons, creating vision boards, and discussions about mindfulness, growth mindset, and identity.  ** Time of class runs from 12:00PM-3:00PM**

3D Arts

Current 6-8 grade students will be exposed to STEAM skills by incorporating engineering and design through projects that students create using a Glowforge Laser Printer. The projects and challenges are centered on teaching students about materials and techniques that will expand their experience beyond SEMS traditional curriculum.

Making Sense of Math @ SEMS

Current 6-8 grade students will gain number sense in math through fun projects, exercises and activities.

Math Remediation **Virtual  Self-Paced Online Program**

Current 6-8 grade students will be provided remediation and supplemental practice in math through a self paced program using 'Edgenuity'. Self-Paced window will be from June 14-August 11. Access code will be emailed to students.

Band Basic and More

Current 6-8 grade students will revisit the basics of band as well as focusing on ensemble playing by working on tuning, balance and blending in an ensemble setting. (Pre-req: This is open to all students with a year of experience with a band instrument (flute, clarinet, sax, horn, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, baritone, tuba, bass, and percussion).

Robotics 

Current 8th grade students will have an extension of their regular school year in critical thinking, engineering, coding, and collaboration with robotics. (prerequisite -1 year of advanced technology)  ** Time of class runs from 8:00AM-12:00PM**
