Hello Parents and Students!
Welcome to SEMS science department page. Teachers across the district are implementing Next Generation Science Standards. The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) ask students to think and behave like scientists and engineers. When students understand how scientists and engineers do their work, and have opportunities to explore, investigate, and explain phenomena, they become more engaged in learning and increase their comprehension.
6th Grade Science
At San Elijo Middle School, our 6th grade Science students will focus on the three-dimensional learning model of the Next Generation Science Standards using the Interdisciplinary model of Earth, Life and Physical Science. The year will be divided into four main units: Systems and Subsystems in Earth and Life Science, Earth System Interactions Cause Weather, Causes and Effects of Regional Climates, and Effects of Global Warming on Living Systems. 6th grade students will be required to collaborate with their peers, use scientific equipment and technology as tools for learning throughout the school year.

7th Grade Science
At San Elijo Middle School, our 7th grade Science students will focus on the three-dimensional learning model of the Next Generation Science Standards using the Interdisciplinary model of Earth, Life and Physical Science. The year will be divided into four main units: Organisms and Nonliving things are made of atoms, Matter Cycles and Energy flows through Organisms and Rocks, Natural Process and Human Activities shape Earth’s resources and Ecosystems, and Sustaining Biodiversity and Ecosystem services in a changing world. Seventh grade students will be required to collaborate with their peers, and content will build on skills learned during the 6th grade.

8th Grade Science
At San Elijo Middle School, our 8th grade Science students will focus on the three-dimensional learning model of the Next Generation Science Standards using the Interdisciplinary model of Earth, Life and Physical Science. The year will be divided into four main units: Objects move and collide, Non-contact Forces influence Phenomena, Evolution explains life’s unity and diversity and Sustaining local and global Biodiversity and Human activity. Eighth grade students will be required to collaborate with their peers, and content will build on skills learned during the 6th and 7th grades.
